A portrait of a couple in their living room, surrounded by family photos and treasured possessions, has won australianphotography.com's October 'Home' photo competition. The winning image, “Bert & Dolce’s Home” was taken by photographer Paul Pennell.

"Dolce has lived in this house for 85 years,” said Pennell. “Bert, her husband, takes her out once a week to have her hair done. They are always smiling and hold hands."

This month's guest judge was Australian Photography + digital managing editor James Ostinga. "We received some great images but my favourite images were the ones that told a story," said Ostinga. "'Bert & Dolce's Home' was a stand out in this regard. The photo of the child on the wall, the clock, the possessions on the mantlepiece, the floral couch and the TV in the corner of the room – they all combine to tell us something about the couple in the photo. It’s not a perfect image and the lighting could have been handled better but there's plenty of emotion here."

Paul Pennell has won a Gary Fong bundle including the Lightsphere Collapsible, Powersnoot and Gear Guard to the value of $250. Gary Fong's Lightsphere Collapsible has enabled photographers to create studio-quality lighting effects with very little equipment and it is perfect for location, press, portrait, sports and wedding photography.
