Three years after starting in Melbourne’s CBD, the Edmund Pearce photography gallery is closing down.

After three years the directors of Edmund Pearce gallery have decided to close their exhibition space in Flinders Lane in Melbourne’s central business district, following the final exhibition of 2014. A space dedicated totally to photography, Edmund Pearce hosted over 100 exhibitions and special projects from February, 2012. Gallery directors Tim Bruce and Jason McQuoid said they had “taken immense pleasure in supporting and promoting the work of both emerging and established artists”. They said the gallery had added to critical discourse and lifted the standards of contemporary photo-media practice in Australia.

In a statement, the directors said, “Despite the strength and diversity of the gallery’s programme, it has become clearly evident that the depth and breadth of the Australian market is not sufficient to sustain a commercial space dedicated to photography”. They expressed their gratitude to the exhibiting artists, collectors, curators, writers, interns, volunteers and patrons who made the gallery a well-respected and exciting venture. Bruce and McQuoid said they were proud of the cultural impact their gallery had achieved in a short period of time and they would continue to be advocates of “Melbourne’s vibrant cultural landscape”.
