Taking out the top prize in the April australianphotography.com 'Low Light' competition is Houen Ying, whose evocative image 'Just Sunrise' was praised by this month's judge Robert Keeley, editor of Australian Photography + Digital magazine, for its effortless air of quiet serenity.

"Capturing great atmospherics is one of the key aspects in shooting powerful landscapes. Houen Ying has succeeded admirably with this misty scene," commented Keeley. "Without any dramatic post production, Ying has created a great mood of stillness and calm in this scene. Shot with a Canon 5D II and a 50 mm prime lens, this is a simple shot, classically executed. It was a case of the right place at the right time."

A strong contender for first place was 'Night Walkers' by Dawn Churchill. "This gaudy, slightly disturbing scene by Dawn Churchill grabbed my attention because it was such a different concept. The artificial lighting creates a creepy feel and the square format was also a nice touch."

Another strong contender for first place was 'Luna Park By Night' by Julie Boyle. Keeley commented: "Black and white can be very effective in the right circumstances, and it added lots of punch to this night scene at the entrance of Luna Park. The vertical format nicely reinforces the lines in the reflection. Good work!"

Ying has won a $250 voucher for a Deluxe Photobook from leading Australian photo book maker Momento.

A total of 20 images were shortlisted for the April 'Low Light' competition and are published below. The theme for the May competition is 'Still Life'. Images must be submitted by midnight, 31 May 2013. Click here to enter.
