Digital media expert Dr Les Walkling is running a series of digital printing workshops in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane through November.

A series of digital printing workshops run by digital media expert Dr Les Walkling and backed by imaging and digital media company Kayell Australia, will be held in Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane throughout November. Walkling is a master print maker and a member of the ND5 group of professional photographers.

The first events in Sydney and Melbourne have sold out, but a second workshop in each city has been scheduled, and places are still available for the Brisbane event. The day-long workshops are designed to familiarise photographers with the technicalities and workflow practices required to produce top-quality prints. Participants can print their own images and work with the latest Epson Pro printers and inks, state-of-the-art printer profiles, and with top-quality papers.

Editing and soft proofing will be carried out on Eizo ColorEdge monitors and participants will leave with finished prints. Each participant will share a Macintosh connected to a Eizo ColorEdge Monitor with an Epson Stylus Pro A2 3880 desktop printer. They’ll need to bring a USB thumbdrive with several images, some raw and some ready to print.

Topics covered will include colour managed workflows from capture to print, file optimisation in Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop, creative colour balancing and editing, advanced black and white conversions and toning, output sharpening strategies, intelligent image resizing, printer drivers compared with RIPs, accurate soft proofing, evaluating paper and print quality, and print viewing, handling and storage. Places are limited to 20 people per workshop and they cost $320 per person.

The second Sydney event is scheduled for November 11, at Epson Australia, 3 Talavera Road, Maquarie Park. The second Melbourne event will be on November 20, at Glow Studios, 269-275 Abbotsford St, North Melbourne. The Brisbane event will be held on November 6 at Warehouse Studios, 2/98 Wecker Road, Mansfield. Registration is at 9.30am and lunch and refreshments will be provided.
