Lensbaby has added a new product to its unique lineup of selective-focus lenses. The Edge 80 Optic has a focal length of 80mm and a maximum aperture of f2.8 (aperture can be adjusted from f2.8 to f22).

Interestingly, the lens produces a flat focus field. That means that instead of producing a round in-focus “sweet spot” like other Lensbaby lenses, the Edge 80 works more like a tilt-shift lens with a beautifully sharp line of focus through the image surrounded by soft blur.

Users can tilt the in-focus area horizontally, vertically or diagonally by adjusting the position of the lens. The effect is similar to the miniature effects that are available in some cameras but is much more convincing – closer to the results produced by specialist view cameras and tilt-shift lenses. Furthermore, the Edge 80 can be used like a conventional high-quality lens, without blurring, when it is pointed straight ahead.

The Edge 80 works with all current Lensbaby lenses (including the Composer Pro, Composer, Control Freak, Muse and Scout) and includes a 12-blade adjustable iris. It is expected to be available in Australian stores from next week and will retail for $339.
