Family Portrait of Diversity

A new exhibition at the ACP in Sydney explores the idea of family within gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender contexts.

The series showcases photographic and installation works by seven emerging and established female artists: Michele Aboud, Deborah Kelly, Annie Magdalena Laerkesen, r e a, The Twilight Girls and Waded.

By celebrating diversity and difference in the 21st century family, guest curator C. Moore Hardy hopes that the exhibition will create a dialogue on what family means today:

"This exhibition is a celebration and realisation of just how far we have come, and the issues, joy, happiness and questions we still have to ask."

Evolving from Hardy’s work documenting the gay and lesbian community in the nineties, the exhibition looks at the many forms family takes in today’s society, whether pre-existing, chosen or created.

We Are Family is on at the Australian Centre for Photography, 257 Oxford Street, Paddington, until 18 May 2014.
