Lord Howe Island

Lord Howe Island’s pristine lagoon, vibrant marine life, sheer volcanic peaks, subtropical forests and untouched beaches make it a stunning location for landscape photography. Add some dawn and dusk light, plus two professional photographers to put you in the right place with new techniques, and you’ll be inspired to take exceptional photographs.

It’s easy to visit Lord Howe as an independent photographer, but your best photos will come from joining a Lord Howe Island Photography Week with 15 like-minded photographers who are full of enthusiasm and experience.

During a Photography Week, you’ll capture delicate ferns and fungi in the forest, a dramatic range of blues in the ocean, 800 vertical metre cliffs rising above coral reef, extremely rare seabirds literally at your toes, and ever-changing light. There’s always patchy cloud about which makes for great tonal contrast, and in any given week, guests will see rainbows, passing storms and sunsets – sometimes all together.

Each day, guests attend a 30-minute workshop on the technical theme of the day and then review the brief for the daily competition. The format is an effective way to focus guests on a particular theme, and have a bit of fun. Over the week, the group works on scale, tone, composition, emotion, movement and colour, and the professional photographers work one-on-one with every guest. In the evening, before dinner, guests have a debrief and show their top two photos of the day.

It’s always a revelation to see how many different perspectives there are from the same location – some see the macro world, some are shooting at 400mm and some have wide angle sharpness from the foreground to the horizon. Guests learn just as much from each other as they do from the professionals, and that’s the point – everybody contributes and everybody improves.

The Photography Week experience is unique. Guests are up early for the sunrise light and a swim in the lagoon, and then come together at breakfast. The food is fresh, light and healthy. After the morning workshop, guests explore the island and maybe have lunch on a high ridge with a stunning view – normally surrounded by hundreds of breeding seabirds.

The guides cover a few different landscape types each day, so there’s a diverse variety of photo opportunities, and they always return to Pinetrees for an afternoon tea of fresh scones, biscuits or muffins. The group then wanders, en masse, to the boatshed deck to watch the sun set over the lagoon with a cold drink. Some have put their cameras away by now, but most have time lapses clicking away in the background. The day is finished with a lovely 4 course dinner at TripAdvisor’s No.2 Hotel in the South Pacific for 2019.
