Winning images from the 15th annual Smithsonian photo comp

Smithsonian.com has announced the winners of its 15th Annual Photo Contest, awarding the top prize to photographer Thong Huu, for his image "Breakfast at the weekly market".

“In northern Vietnam, people come to the weekly market to exchange goods and culture,” Huu writes. “They usually wake up very early to go to market and have breakfast here.”

The competition received 48,000 submissions from photographers in 155 countries and territories. 

Contestants submitted photos in six categories: Natural World, American Experience, Travel, People, Altered Images and Mobile.

Sara Jacoby’s image, “Rare,” was chosen as the people's choice winner, receiving the highest percentage of votes with more than 38,000.

The 2018 edition of the competition is now open at Smithsonian.com.
