"Capturing the unseen beauty of the everyday, David Russell’s striking image titled ‘The Green Road’ is my choice as overall winner of Australian Photography Magazine’s September photo competition.

A standout field, and including some truly stunning images, what struck me about David’s image was a combination of the natural colours, framing, timing, composition … and benefits & wisdom in commuting by bike.

Daily we read about more traffic, longer travel times, higher workloads, busier lives and poorer health. The image is current and timely, it is here, now and the future. Whether the rider is heading to school, work, university, home or out socially, David’s photograph speaks volumes about smarter travel, healthier living and better well-being. Finally, and metaphorically, to me it is the antithesis of the typical ‘single occupant commuter stuck in traffic’ photos we often see. Stuff the traffic I say, take a bike instead!"
