Video: Shooting backlit and natural light to create dreamy portraits

Comments Comments

Photographer Irene Rudnyk has a clean and simple style that translates to some pretty gorgeous images.

In this video she shows how she uses natural light from a room in her house along with a reflector, although she doesn't even use this for all the shots. The key is a narrow aperture (She shoots with an 85mm f/1.2) with the window acting to help backlight her subject.

Some cameras can struggle with metering a scene like this, so if you try it, make sure you shoot in RAW to give yourself the best chance of making local adjustments to exposure (especially on your subject's face) in post.
