A photography exhibition coming to Melbourne this month promises to offer a rare glimpse of upcoming Olympics city, Rio de Janeiro.

On July 28 the Color Factory in Gore St, Fitzroy  is the venue for the exhibition which showcases colour images taken by Australian photographer Rodney Schaffer.

To shoot his images, Schaffer took to the streets of Rio with a gaffer-taped Hasselblad XPan camera, 45mm  lens and colour negative film.

Schaffer says he expected to see “an out of control Surfers Paradise bristling with menace” but instead found a “historically and geographically beautiful city loaded with contradictions and an energy that made me feel young again.”

His images resulted in a series that celebrates the juxtaposition of the poverty of Rio’s favelas contrasted with the opulent playgrounds of its more fortunate citizens.

Schaffer has visited Rio, a city he admits he’s become slightly obsessed with, four times between 2008 and 2014.
