Australian Photography + digital magazine and australianphotography.com have teamed up with highly-regarded AP contributor, author and educator Mark Galer to offer an interactive online course to help beginner and intermediate photographers master the essential skills of photography and boost their creativity.

The five-week AP Creative Photography Essentials 101 course is designed to help participants go beyond the camera's 'Auto' mode and start harnessing the camera's full potential to achieve a range of creative outcomes. It also covers useful techniques to optimise and enhance images in post-production, using Adobe Photoshop Lightroom.

Online 'jargon-free' study guides are written in plain English and can be accessed via a computer or mobile device, or downloaded for 'offline' study. The guides are richly illustrated with Mark Galer’s images so each new technique is easily understood. The guides show students how to create professional looking results with just the basic equipment and no additional lighting.

Over the duration of the five-week course, participants are set four creative photography challenges to apply their new skills to a broad range of photographic genres including portraiture, landscape, street, action and art photography.

Participants receive unbiased and professional constructive feedback about their work while learning how to assess the technical merits of their own images.

Online support is provided by experienced photography tutor Mark Derbyshire, who is available to provide feedback and answer any technical or creative questions.

Students who successfully complete the course will be awarded an AP Certificate of Achievement.

Participants must have access to a digital SLR or mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera with a lens that can zoom from wide angle to short telephoto (a standard kit zoom will suffice). You will also need access to a computer and a copy of Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 4 or later.

AP Creative Photography Essentials 101 costs $195 including course materials, one-on-one feedback, and online assistance. Enrollments are open now for the first five-week course beginning on 22 May 2014.
