Steve McCurry reveals latest project

Comments Comments

Legendary photographer Steve McCurry was challenged by a luxury watchmaker Vacheron Constantin to capture the 'spirit of travel' in a collaboration marking the launch of a new watch collection.

The globetrotting collection, which covered 12 countries, offers fresh perspectives on destinations such as Grand Central station in New York where rather than focusing on the pulsing crowds that flock there by day, McCurry focussses on the echoing, almost empty corridors at night. He also photographed Ethiopia's 'new Jerusalem' and Mexico's aqueducts for the series.

Ethiopia, Lalibela. It’s a unique structure not unlike the pyramids or medieval cathedrals. Though built 700 years ago, this location continues to be a point of pilgrimage today ©Steve McCurry/Vacheron Constantin

Uzbekistan. Having been there 10 years ago, I was familiar with the location. However, the timeless architecture still holds just as striking and iconic as it did when it was built around 2,500 years ago. ©Steve McCurry/Vacheron Constantin

Mexico. You fully grasp the visual and poetic strength of this aqueduct when you realise that it was built over 500 years ago with absolutely perfect symmetry. ©Steve McCurry/Vacheron Constantin

New York. I found the constant human interaction fascinating, but spending a whole night there was even more incredible. We had the entire station to ourselves, as if in a dream. ©Steve McCurry/Vacheron Constantin

India. This place immediately reminded me of the graphic work of Maurits Cornelis Escher, notably expressed through his art of creating optical illusions by playing with lines. ©Steve McCurry/Vacheron Constantin

China. What impresses me about this Buddha is his benevolently smiling face, observing the world and gazing affectionately at us as if he wished to protect us for all eternity. ©Steve McCurry/Vacheron Constantin

Morocco. There is a poetic story likening this blue city to the skies or heaven. Viewing the town at night from further away provides a magical vantage point where the warm-hued lights give a nice contrast to the blue-painted city. ©Steve McCurry/Vacheron Constantin
