Sony has unveiled a new full-frame, fixed-lens compact camera, the Cyber-shot RX1R II. The new model, which takes off where the RX1 and RX1R left off, features a 42.4-megapixel sensor and a fast Zeiss Sonnar T* 35mm f2 lens.

It also boasts a world's first optical low pass filter that can be set to 'off', 'standard' or 'high' based on user preference with the option to select low pass filter bracketing. In the 'off' setting the camera offers optimal sharpness and detail, but is more prone to moire in scenes with fine repeating patterns. In the 'standard' and 'high' settings the camera is better equipped to handle moire and colour artefacts.

Unlike the models it supersedes, the RX1R II offers a retractable XGA OLED electronic viewfinder similar to the system first seen on the Sony RX100 IV. The viewfinder is matched by a 3-inch, 1.2 million-dot tilting LCD, which pivots down 41 degrees and up 109 degrees.

Other key features include macro shooting to 14cm; 1/2000 sec flash sync speed; uncompressed 14-bit RAW image capture; 30 per cent faster AF performance than the original RX1; 5 fps continuous shooting;  full HD (1920 x 1080) video at 60p, 30p and 24p; and wireless connectivity with Wi-Fi and NFC.

The RX1R II will be available in Australia in December 2015. Pricing has not been announced.
