A new crowd-funded device promises to deliver smartphone image transfer and remote control to most Canon and Nikon DSLRs, even older non-WiFi models.

The CASE Remote slots into a DSLR hotshoe and allows photographers to fire the camera shutter remotely from their smartphone and, if the camera has live view, see this images on the screen of the smartphone. The designers gained support to develop their first version of the device through crowd funding at indiegogo.com, and an improved version is now being finalised for a launch through the website.

It will be officially available online in September, though early release models can be bought online at indiegogo.com. Measuring 50mm square, the device fits easily into the palm of your hand, and the designers say it has a user-friendly interface, a live-view option, and touch focus, all via the smartphone screen.

It works remotely from a distance of 50 metres, has the ability to wirelessly transfer photos to a mobile device, and will operate continuously for up to five hours. It can be used in potentially tricky shooting scenarios like wildlife photography, macro work, and time-lapse shooting.

Controls like shutter speed, aperture, ISO, and white balance can all be adjusted remotely. Plug-in smart sensors are available for object-triggered shooting, and it’s also compatible with iOS and Android systems. It will work on a wide range of SLRs from both Canon and Nikon.

The CASE Remote will ship as a basic unit for US $99, or as a kit including accessories for $129. However, via the website www.indiegogo.com it can be bought for an ‘earlybird’ discount of US $79.
