The September issue of Australian Photography + digital is now out in newsagencies on iPad and via subscription.

The September edition of Australian Photography + digital magazine explores the stunning landscape imagery of pro shooter Dylan Fox. In an interview with Mark Gafen we discover how and why Fox was drawn to the craft of creating his dramatically lit landscapes, and what pushes him to search for more, both in Australia and also in the US.

We also talk in detail with four professionals about how they make their distinctive images of water. From semi-abstract close-ups of individual drops to images of powerful ocean swells or classic waterfalls, there are myriad options available for creating dramatic scenes involving this fundamental element of life. Each style requires distinctly different technical and creative approaches, and you’ll learn more about how to handle them in this feature.

You might have thought the long debate over the advantages and disadvantages of shooting in RAW format versus JPEG had been run and won. But our technical writer Peter Burian isn’t so sure! He prises this debate open once again, and the result may surprise you when Burian looks at the pros and cons of each format.

While professional shooters will almost always opt for the relative safety and flexibility afforded by RAW mode, Burian pushes the argument in another direction, explaining that for many amateurs (and even in some circumstances, professionals) there can be good reasons to use the JPEG format. See what you think!

Our software expert Mark Galer takes on an area which seldom gets a full airing when he looks at an important aspect of video production. Galer explains how to use Photoshop to grade movies to a high quality standard. Professional videographers use dedicated software for this essential procedure, but in a handy step-by-step guide Galer explains how part-timers who mainly shoot still images can still use Photoshop to achieve the same effective result.

You’ll find lots more inspiration and advice in this month’s issue of Australian Photography + digital magazine, so make sure you pick up a copy.
