What grabs your attention on a magazine cover? Which images work, and which ones don't?

In this month's photo comp we want you to try your hand at shooting a cover for Australian Photography magazine. Try to capture an image that would draw your eye on the newsstand. We're happy for you to shoot any subject you like as long as the image is 'vertical format'.

Shooting a cover is a little bit different to shooting a regular image as it has to work well with quite a lot of text. The best covers tend to have a strong central point of interest in the lower half of the image with 'space' for a masthead at the top, and room for coverlines around the edges.

For the competition, we don't need you to submit full-size, print quality images. 'Web size' is fine – ideally 1000 pixels on the longest edge. We don't want you to add text either – just the image.

The winner, selected by our guest judge, will receive a $250 Momento photo book voucher, while the People's Choice, voted by Facebook users, will win a $150 Momento voucher.

And, if we think your image would work well as an AP cover, we'll be in touch to ask if you want to be published in a future issue of the magazine. We'll pay you for your trouble of course, but you retain the copyright so the decision to be published is completely up to you.

See below for some examples of past AP covers. We look forward to seeing what you can do!
