The winners and finalists of 2014’s Nikon Walkley photographic awards are continuing to tour the country.

A collection of stunning news and photo-journalistic images taken by some of the best media photographers in Australia can still be seen at venues around the country. The winners and finalists in the Nikon Walkley photography awards will be displayed in the Lovett Gallery in the Newcastle Regional Library in NSW from next week, and then at Brisbane Powerhouse from March 14.

Nikon Walkley Photo of the Year winner Andrew Quilty picked up his award for a dramatic image of a young child on a hospital bed totally wrapped in a heat blanket, the victim of a domestic heating accident in the Province of Helmand in Afghanistan. He also picked up the Press Photographer of the Year award.

The finalist categories included Feature/Photography Essay, News Photography, Nikon-Walkley Press Photographer of the Year and Sport Photography. The judges described Quilty’s winning photo of the year “Baby Burn Victim in Boost Hospital” as a “clear stand out”. They said Quilty captured “a striking and powerfully emotive image that allows the viewer to gauge instantly the full magnitude of the little girl’s injuries. That her burns are the result of a domestic accident and not military conflict increases the surreal impact almost to that of a fine-art picture.”

The winner in the Sport category was Cameron Spencer for his “H20 Action” portfolio in which water in both its liquid and frozen forms was the common theme. In the Feature/Photo Essay category finalists included Lisa Maree Williams for her series on drought at Rio Station in outback Queensland, Brendan Esposito’s powerful series of images showing the devastation wrought by Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines township of Tacloban, and Eddie Jim’s winning series on Hayden McLean, a 35 year old man who is severely autistic, mildly intellectually disabled, and who was highly sensitive to noise and unkindness in his natural environment.

The winner of the Community/Regional prize was Adam Hourigan, who shoots for the Grafton-based The Daily Examiner. The judges said, “Adam Hourigan shows strong skills and creativity in a body of work that is both emotive and well-executed. From horse racing at the Clarence River Jockey Club to a lucky escape on the Pacific Highway and a 60th wedding anniversary snuggle in the cinema, Adam’s portfolio shows his commitment to providing a small regional newspaper with exceptional imagery.”

Judges for the 2014 Nikon-Walkley Awards for Excellence in Photojournalism were Stuart Hannagan, Jon Reid, Renee Nowytarger, David Dare Parker and Jack Picone.

The Nikon-Walkley award winning images will be on display at Lovett Gallery, in Newcastle Region Library, NSW, from February 10 until March 10, then at The Brisbane Powerhouse in Queensland from March 14 until April 27.
