New tech screening measures to affect those flying from Middle East

If you're travelling from Abu Dhabi, Doha or Dubai, be prepared for longer customs checks.

In a statement made last week, the Australian Government announced tech screenings on flights coming from Abu Dhabi, Doha and Dubai with the intention of “bolstering aviation security.”

Airlines affected by the new measures will include Qantas, Etihad, Emirates and Qatar Airways, which will all have random explosives screenings.

Minister for Transport, Darren Chester, assures that despite the added security measures, “there is no specific threat to Australia.”

“Our changes are in line with the UK, which recently announced that people travelling from Doha, Abu Dhabi and Dubai will be subject to random explosive trace detection (ETD) screening.”

For now, your camera gear is safe to be carried onboard as despite the increased screenings, no ban on in-flight electronic devices larger than a mobile phone has been announced, unlike the UK and the USA.
