Developer Avatron Software has launched a new app that allows an iPad to be used as a pressure-sensitive drawing tablet, enabling users to draw directly onto their photos in programs like Photoshop and Aperture.

Air Stylus, released last week, requires an additional third-party iPad stylus such as Wacom's Intuos Creative Stylus, Adonit's Jot Touch 4 and Ten One Design's Pogo Connect. The app is said to be compatible with most graphics programs including Photoshop, Lightroom and Apple Aperture.

Currently, the app only works with iPad 3 (and later) and computers running Mac OS X 10.7 (and later). Support for Windows 7 and 8 is said to be coming soon. Air Stylus includes support for gestures such as 'pinch-to-zoom' while drawing, but also offers users the option to toggle "palm rejection" on and off to suit different drawing styles.

The app costs $24.99 at the App Store. It does not include a drawing stylus which must be purchased separately.
