Photographs by Robert Mapplethorpe, Larry Clark, Nan Goldin, Chris Burden, Warwick Baker, Rozalind Drummond and Collier Schorr, some of which have never been shown in Australia, will go on display at the National Portrait Gallery later this week.

The exhibition Tough and Tender explores themes of youth, the coming of age, intimacy and emotional vulnerability through photography.

The exhibition of will be opened tomorrow by Australian writer Christos Tsiolkas, author of The Slap and Head On.

Tough and Tender will be on display to the public from Friday 15 July until Sunday 16 October 2016.
