  • Bruno Barbey, A boy plays in the Rivière des Galets. Réunion. 1991. “When traveling and photographing, you have to establish human contact while remaining discreet. Luck sometimes plays a role too. This boy was cleaning his bicycle in a spring and playing with it; my luck was that he wore green shorts matching the color of
his bike. The result is a strange and surreal setting in which the
boy seems to ride his bicycle under water. Photography is the only language that can be understood anywhere in the world.” © Bruno Barbey/Magnum Photos

  • Christopher Anderson, Pia with balloon in Gràcia. Barcelona, Spain. 2016. “I chose this image because I notice a couple of my obsessions in it. The first, most obviously, is my obsession with photographing my family. I’m told that the color red often appears in my photographs. Perhaps that qualifies as obsession. And, I really
love The Red Balloon, by Albert Lamorisse … but I wouldn’t call
it an obsession.” © Christopher Anderson/Magnum Photos

The June 2019 Magnum Square Print Sale sees Magnum photographers and estates delve into their archives to select a single image that reflects the issues and working practices which have 'obsessed the collective’s members throughout their careers.'

From deep-seated beliefs that have driven career-long documentary explorations of political and social issues by Eli Reed and Susan Meiselas, to aesthetic fascinations which pushed the practices of photographers like Werner Bischof and Trent Parke into new, experimental territory – the selection represents the great breadth of the Magnum collective’s creative
motivations and output.

Magnum Photos was founded in Paris in 1947 as an artists’ co-operative by four pioneering photographers: Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, George Rodger, and David “Chim” Seymour.

‘Obsessions’ Magnum’s Square Print Sale runs from 11pm Monday 10 June until 2pm Saturday 15 June 2019. Signed and estate stamped, museum quality, 15,2x15,2cm prints from over 80 artists will exceptionally be available for $100, for 5 days only, from shop.magnumphotos.com.
