Retro camera producer Lomography is launching its first camera to use instant film.

The company has been making vintage-looking toy film cameras for decades, inspired by the Russian-made Lomo Kompakt Automat, a compact film camera that took pictures with deeply vibrant colours and deep saturation. The Lomo'Instant is another step in the renaissance of analogue photography, popularised by the Impossible Project which showed there is strong interest in lo-fi cameras.

The Lomo Instant uses Fujifilm Instax Mini film – the same cartridges that are loaded in to Fujifilm's instax mini 90 camera – and has a retro look and distinctly fun-loving feel to it. Both cameras have common features such as a long-exposure bulb mode and multiple exposures on a single piece of film. A range of colour gels can be placed over the flash to add different colours and tones to photos.

The camera is powered by four AAA batteries and also has a cable release and tripod mounts.

Lomography plans to have the camera manufactured and ready for delivery in November 2014 with a retail launch price (excluding attachable lenses) of $A130 to $A160. However, the Lomo'Instant is being launched by the online funding platform Kickstarter, and if you buy early, you can get one for just $A75.
