Last week we published the winners of our September 'Letters and Numbers' photo competition but, as some staff were on leave, we weren't able to publish the full list of shortlisted images. The following 'winners announcement' has been updated to include the 17 images that made the shortlist.

Once again our monthly photo competition has attracted plenty of entries, and the standard has been high. The theme for the September issue was 'Letters and Numbers'. This month we opted for in-house judging, with magazine editor Robert Keeley making the final selection.

From a shortlist of 17 images, Keeley chose the image ‘Zer-oh’, by Mick Unwin, which presented a surreal and fiery version of the letter ‘O’ and number '0'. He said, “All sorts of painting with light and shooting of fiery effects have occurred in this scene, set against a good clean background which made it stand out even more. The overall impact is quite dramatic and it certainly makes you think twice! The composition is simple, but strong, and the square format also really works well for this type of scene.”

Two other images received honourable mentions – 'Artificial Light' by Dylan Vowles, which also used the painting with light technique in a simple yet powerful way, and 'Night Letters' by Houen Ying, who captured lighting in a streetscape to great effect. Mick Unwin’s image won a Gary Fong bundle including the Lightsphere Collapsible, Powersnoot and Gear Guard to the value of $250. Gary Fong's Lightsphere Collapsible has enabled photographers to create studio-quality lighting effects with very little equipment and it is perfect for location, press, portrait, sports and wedding photography. The theme for the October competition is ‘Home’. Images must be submitted by midnight October 31, 2013.
