The results are in for australianphotography.com’s first photo competition of 2014.

A dynamic shot of an apparently gravity-defying skateboarder has won australianphotography.com's first photo competition of 2014. The photo by Joshua Reuveni won the sport-themed competition from a field of more than 300 entries.

Our guest judge this month was Jaimi Chisholm, an up and coming photographer who took out the top sport award in Capture magazine’s 2014 'Emerging Photographer of the the Year' competition.

"It was great to see a variety of sports photographed, as well as those taking on techniques of panning, and playing with perspective in wide-angle lenses," said Chisholm. "There was an occasional tendency to over-process and over-vignette with some, but still good to see people getting out there and experimenting."

Chisholm praised Reuveni’s winning image for its timing and composition. "This image stood out because of its clean composition. The skater has been captured at the peak of his jump with good technique, and the sky separates him from the park below. A further interesting aspect was the background, which definitely adds to the image and doesn’t detract from the focal point of the skater. It shows context, and creates an interesting narrative. A tiny criticism is the power pole in the background that is slightly off vertical. This is a minor distraction that could have been fixed in post by correcting lens distortion. (I’m just particular with level horizons and upright verticals!) Either way, it’s a very strong image and congratulations to Joshua," said Chisholm.

Chisholm selected an additional four images for special commendation: "Sport" by Joseph Tam, "Kung Fu" by Janette Anderson, "Skateboarding Sunset Ollie" by Marcus Hart and "Speed Demon" by Daniel Pockett.

Joshua Reuveni has won a brilliant Spyder4PRO colour calibration device from Kayell Australia valued at $240.

The shortlist for the January ‘Sport’ competition included 22 images, all of which are published below.

The theme for our next photo competition is The Colour Yellow. You can see the entries we've received so far, or submit one of your own images here.
