The first comprehensive Australian exhibition of the work of US photographer Gregory Crewdson has opened at Melbourne's Centre for Contemporary Photography.
"In a Lonely Place" opened at the Centre for Contemporary Photography on 28 September and includes photographs from three major Crewdson series, 'Fireflies' (1996), 'Beneath the Roses' (2003-2008) and 'Sanctuary' (2010). Also presented for the first time will be Crewdson's video "Field Notes" (2009).
In 'Beneath the Roses', anonymous townscapes, forest clearings and streets are revealed as sites of mystery and wonder. In 'Sanctuary', Crewdson shoots at the now-deserted Cinecittà studios in Rome, once used by the legendary Italian film director Federico Fellini. In Crewdson's images disused sets of ancient Rome, medieval Italy and nineteenth-century New York feature occasional unexpected views of the surrounding contemporary Roman suburbia. Crewdson's 'Fireflies' images are simpler, recording simple specks of light as the tiny insects illuminate the night.
Gregory Crewdson received a BA from the State University of New York in 1985 and an MFA in Photography from Yale School of
Art in 1988. He has exhibited
widely in the United States and Europe. He is Associate Professor and
Director of Graduate Studies in Photography at the Yale School of Art,
Yale University and is represented by Gagosian Gallery and
White Cube Gallery.
The exhibition is at the Centre for Contemporary Photography (404 George St, Fitzroy) until 11 November 2012.
