The US stock photo library Getty Images is backing the "Movember" campaign in which men grow moustaches and beards through November to raise money for cancer research and mental health.

Made in Movember, an outdoor exhibition featuring images of 20 hirsute men with luxurious moustaches has been launched by US photo library Getty Images to support the Movember Foundation in raising funds for men's cancer and mental health research.

The Movember campaign runs each November, and already the Getty images have appeared on the streets of Melbourne and Brisbane. The exhibition includes a range of photos provided by Getty Images, including Jimi Hendrix, Nick Cave and Salvador Dali as well as everyday members of the public. It's been unveiled as Movember counts down to the November 1.

Men start the month clean shaven and then set out over the next 30 days to grow the best moustache they can. It's hoped the conversations about  growing moustaches will turn to discussion about cancer and mental health. "What we make and do in life defines us," said Movember spokesperson, Tom Betts.

"This year's campaign – Made in Movember – focuses upon makers, thinkers, growers and doers. Mo Bros and Mo Sistas (women who like men with beards!) will be making a difference by getting people to think about their health by growing, or supporting the growth of a moustache and doing something about the state of men's health. We're delighted to be joining forces with Getty Images to deliver an exhibition of inspirational mo's, with the intention of getting the conversation started and encouraging people to sign up for Movember to make a difference," he added.

The Movember Foundation is a global organisation committed to men's health. The Movember community has raised $580 million to date and funded more than 800 men's health programs in 21 countries. The Getty images can be seen from Friday, October 10 until Sunday, November 2 in Brisbane at the Powerhouse Museum,119 Lamington St, New Farm, and in Melbourne at The Coopers Malthouse Theatre,113 Sturt St, Southbank.
