Analogue photography will be the focus of an upcoming event run atFoto Riesel in Sydney next week.

In an era where nearly everything is digital, Sydney’s analogue photography specialist Foto Riesel will showcase the beautiful and individual nature of film photography through a series of educational talks and workshops next week. The event, Retro Revolution, will take place on Thursday, December 5, from 6-9pm.

Organisers say there will also be special offers on printing and processing, film and processing products, plastic and medium-format cameras, ‘old school’ cameras and accessories. Spot prizes will be given on the night. “Due to the surprising imperfections of film, analogue photography is making a comeback in the photographic industry,’ says Foto Riesel’s Managing Director John Wallace.

‘We’ve had such a huge resurgence in plastic and medium-format cameras, as well as interest in quality second-hand cameras. Film and print is very much back in vogue.” Wallace says, “There’s almost a revolt against the hugely controllable nature of digital photography. Most photographers feel they’re able to take a reasonable shot using their smartphones or compact digital cameras, but shooting with film requires a bit more skill."

"The image quality of film is also superior to a digital image and we know a lot of photography enthusiasts are now seeing the difference and wanting more interesting, grainier shots with a distinct ‘film’ feel to them. People also love the fact they can pick up their old gear, play with it, and get some creative results. Plastic film cameras are also extremely popular as there’s the surprising and unknown element of them which brings a bit more fun and spontaneity to photography. Film is certainly not dead!”

Foto Riesel will open the doors of its new premises at 360 Kent Street, Sydney for a night of retro photo fun. The event is free and open to the public.
