February 'Aerial' photo comp: The wrap

Comments Comments

A big congratulations to Justin De Castro who has won our February ‘Aerial’ photo competition with his bird's eve view of a typical Aussie backyard.

"Justin’s image is both poetic and visually articulate, and while there were a lot of strong entries in this month's competition, Justin’s image just had that right amount vision and technical edge to kick it over the line," said this month's guest judge Anthony McKee.

"I like the precise placement of our viewpoint directly over the pool, and the neatly aligned fences that border of the image. What is really enchanting though, is the level of detail we can enjoy, and the storytelling that is shared by this clarity. We see the hoses and pipes around the pool, the vegetables in the garden and the dog’s squeaky chicken lying in the grass.

We can see the family dog in the upper left of the frame and some friends sitting in the shade, while appearing upside down in the middle of the pool are a couple of mates enjoying the water. I even enjoy seeing the water trails where people have been getting in and out of the pool. I did try rotating this image 180-degrees to make the men appear right way up, but this image does work better with the white roof in the lower right of the frame, rather than the top left."

Over on Facebook, the People's Choice award went to Jessica Robertson's "Trawling the Deep Blue Sea" which picked up more than 250 likes.
