Got a question about australianphotography.com's monthly photo competition? Hopefully you'll find the answer here. If not, feel free to post your questions in the comments section below and we'll do our best to answer them.

How much does it cost to enter?

Australian Photography's monthly online photo competition is free.

When does the competition open?

The competitions and themes are announced in the first week of each month.

When does the competition close?

From January to November the monthly competitions close at midnight AEST on the last day of the month. In December, the competition closes earlier (usually around the 15th of the month) to allow for the extended Christmas and New Year holiday period.

Is there a maximum file size for my entry?

Yes, 5MB.

What are the ideal dimensions for my image entry?

As long as your image file is less than 5MB, there are no maximum or minimum image dimensions. However, we recommend your image be sized between 2000 and 4000 pixels on the longest edge.

For example:

Horizontal image: 2-4000 pixels wide
Square image: 2-4000 pixels wide
Vertical image: 2-4000 pixels high

Which file format should I use?

Your image should be saved in JPEG or PNG format. JPEG images use the *.jpg or *.jpeg extension. PNG files use the *.png extension. Images submitted in other formats (eg. PSD, TIF, DNG) will be rejected.

How many images can I enter?

You can enter as many images as you like, but please only enter your best work.

How do I get involved in People's Choice voting?

At the end of each month we publish the shortlist on the Australian Photography Facebook page. To cast your vote in the People's Choice award simply like your favourite images.

When and where will the winners be announced?

The winners are announced at www.australianphotography.com and on AP's Facebook page. The announcement is generally made before the 20th of the following month. For example, the winners of the August photo competition will be announced before 20 September. That said, sometimes due to other commitments we may be several days late with the announcement. The best way to stay in touch with what's happening with the monthly competition is to subscribe yo our free weekly email. There we'll announce competition themes, winners and much more.

Do I need to subscribe to Australian Photography magazine to enter the australianphotography.com photo comp?

No, you do not need to be a subscriber to enter the free australianphotography.com monthly photo comp.

Is it okay to add a watermark to my image?

No. We would prefer you include any copyright information in the EXIF data, rather than on the image itself. The problem with watermarks is that they diminish the appearance of the image -- this is taken into account in the judging process.

Is there a junior section of the competition?

No.

I uploaded my image a few hours ago but I can't see it on the site. Why?

If your image hasn't appeared on the site there may be a problem with your entry. The following is a list of the most common problems:

1. The filename of the image you tried to upload included unusual characters, eg % $ ( ) @ *, etc. For example, if you have an image called mydog(#1).jpg you should change it to mydog1.jpg before you enter it.

2. Your image is larger than 5MB. Resize the image so it's less than 5MB.

3. The image you tried to upload is not in JPEG or PNG format. The software will not accept your image if it is in TIFF, PSD, BMP, DNG, etc.Save your file in JPEG format and try again.
