Pia Johnson’s new photographic series "In a dim light…" explores issues around cultural difference, diaspora and identity, all of which have stemmed from her mixed background of Chinese Malaysian and Italian Australian descent.

The exhibition, which opens at Edmund Pearce gallery in Swanston St, Melbourne, on 30 October and will be on show at the gallery from 29 October to 22 November 2014, grew out of Johnson’s 2013 residency at Studio Kura, in Itoshima Japan.

Johnson says the low-key images explore ideas such as, "insomnia and otherness" to create an experience of disquiet and dark.

Johnson has exhibited across Australia as well as internationally, and her work is collected in various public and public collections including the National Gallery of Victoria. She has been a finalist in the Josephine Ulrich and Win Schubert Prize, along with USA Onward Compe ’12, and the Ballarat International Foto Biennale Take a Bow Performance Photography Prize.
