The 2104 Nikon-Walkley photojournalism awards, which cover a range of genres, are now open for entries.

The 2014 Nikon-Walkley Awards for excellence in photojournalism are now open for submissions until August 31. The organisers say the awards represent the pinnacle of achievement for Australian press photographers and are judged by a panel of senior photographers and picture editors from the industry.

The award categories include news photography, a feature or photographic essay, sport photography, the Nikon-Walkley Press Photographer of the Year, and the Nikon-Walkley Photo of the Year.

The Nikon-Walkley photographic awards recognise visual journalists producing still photography for any platform. The criteria include storytelling, courage, public impact, creativity, innovative use of technology, technical ability and resourcefulness and can include soundslides and photofilm.

Photographers can also enter their work in relevant All Media categories in the Walkley Awards. A photographer can only enter once in each photography category and each entry must contain at least one picture which has been published in the 12 months from September 1, 2013 to August 31, 2014.

The cost of entering the Nikon-Walkley photographic categories is $295. For photographers only one fee is payable, regardless of the number of categories entered. Through its support of the Walkley awards, Media, Entertainment, and Arts Alliance covers the entry cost for its members. Entry to Walkley All Media categories will require an entry fee per category for non-members of $295.

The Nikon-Walkley Photo of the Year recognises an outstanding “hero” image worthy of individual celebration and recognition. Entries aren’t submitted for this award. Photographic judges in the awards will select a single image that defines the year from all images entered across the Nikon-Walkley photographic categories.

Entries close on Sunday August 31 at 5pm. Finalists will be announced and Nikon-Walkley Press Photography Exhibition will open on Thursday, October 16, while the winners will be announced at the 59th annual Walkley Awards for Excellence in Journalism on December 4.

Photographic prizes for portrait photography and community or regional photography are also awarded each year. Winners receive a prize from Nikon and their work is showcased in the Nikon-Walkley Press Photography Finalists exhibition alongside the award categories.
