In a sign of things to come, Chinese drone maker DJI has signed up to the Micro Four Thirds (MFT) standard. Olympus and Panasonic jointly announced the the MFT standard in 2008 and have since produced a diverse range of camera bodies, lenses and other accessories for the system.

While some DJI drones are designed to carry third-party cameras (including GoPro models and DSLRs), a growing number of DJI products incorporate DJI's own built-in cameras. Presumably the move into Micro Four Thirds will allow DJI to offer improved image quality and give users the flexibility to tap into Olympus and Panasonic's large and growing range of interchangeable lenses.

DJI has been tight-lipped about its plans, telling dpreview.com, "DJI is always exploring new avenues to push the boundaries of what is possible. DJI currently has no further information about upcoming products."

DJI's versatile inspire 1. Expect to see a version with a Micro Four Thirds sensor in the future.
