Canon has unveiled a new large-sensor compact camera, with similar specs to Sony's RX100 III. Like the RX100, the Powershot G7X features a 1-inch type (13.2 x 8.8mm), 20.2-megapixel CMOS sensor and a wide f/1.8-2.8 lens zoom lens, though with a slightly longer zoom range extending from 24-100mm (equivalent) compared to the RX100 III's 24-70mm focal length.

The camera includes GPS for geotagging, built-in NFC and WiFi for image sharing and remote operation from a smartphone, and a 180° tilting, 3-inch, million-dot touchscreen. A customisable control wheel around the lens can be used to adjust key settings including aperture and shutter speed.

Video capture is available in Full HD resolution at up to 60fps and a new Manual Movie function allows aperture, shutter and ISO to be adjusted during filming. Other features include image stabilisation, built-in ND filter (for slow shutter speed shooting in bright light), and a Creative Shot mode which creates six different shots each with a unique composition, filter or subject focus.

The Powershot G7X will be available in Australia from October. Pricing has not been announced.
