Basic studio lighting classes will be run by Kayell Australia in Sydney and Melbourne in February.

Kayell Australia is running expanded studio lighting classes after a high demand for the workshops in Sydney and Melbourne. Participants will explore the techniques of photographing people by learning the basics of lighting with speed lights and studio flash in this practical course. They’ll learn about the direction, quality and colour of light on a subject and surrounds. The course is designed to enhance portrait photography skills and to assist students to develop your own techniques.

This is an intermediate level course for people who already know how to use digital cameras. It will run for three hours and during the day there will be a model available during the photo sessions. Kayell Managing Director Rob Gatto said students would get the most out of the course if they’re familiar with their camera’s basic operations.

Participants will need their DSLR, a medium range zoom, a 50mm and/or an 85mm lens and memory CF/SD cards. Gatto said, “We will supply all the Elinchrom and Lastolite flash and lighting modifiers/backgrounds required. The course will cover lighting terminology – direct, diffused and reflected, as well as high key and low key arrangements; how to control light intensity and contrast; lighting ratios; when and how to use modifiers and reflectors; various aspects of lighting; effective use of backdrops and how to light them; lighting for mood and effect; traditional studio lighting set ups for portraiture; and creative techniques.

The workshop costs $99 and will run on February 15 in both Melbourne and Sydney. For further details contact Kayell Australia 1300 529 355, Sydney (02) 8423 7700, or Melbourne (03) 8412 2800. Places are filling fast.
