The August issue of Australian Photography + digital is now out in newsagencies, on iPad and via subscription.

The August edition of Australian Photography + digital features our annual comprehensive education review which presents readers with all the information they’ll need on schools and institutions around the country offering specialist photographic training. But this issue also has a diverse range of features, from a story covering the typical working day of a pro shooter to an explanation on how to simply fix dust spots in post-production.

Each year our August issue carries a detailed listing of every major photography education facility in the country. As well, we feature comments from educators at some of these leading institutions. This makes up the most comprehensive annual overview of imaging education in this country, and it acts as a great springboard for anybody thinking of learning more about their craft.

But alongside education, this issue is big on inspiration. We follow a typical working day by pro shooter Gavin Jowitt (though he insists his work is so varied he has no typical day!). Jowitt shoots everything outback mining operations to inner city health care facilities, and then heads home to handle his paperwork. Our story reveals that the life of a pro shooter is endlessly challenging!

Young up-and-coming social documentary shooter Kristian Laemmle-Ruff is another pro who’s working his way up through the ranks, and his recent project to document the life and times of the members of a small country town has resulted in a well-received book project, which makes up part of our profile on this rising star of the craft. Laemmle-Ruff’s images evoke the work of the great shooters of the 20th century, like Dorothea Lange and Walker Evans, and those legends are just two of the names who have inspired his style.

On the practical front technical expert Peter Burian discusses the pros and cons of shooting with a tripod versus relying of image stabiliser technology, and James Ostinga looks at a simple post-production solution for every digital shooter’s bugbear of dust spots on an image. There's plenty more in this month's issue of Australian Photography. Don't miss it!
