Two former Apple engineers have launched Astropad, an app that allows an iPad to be used as a pressure-sensitive drawing tablet alongside image-editing programs such as Photoshop.

The app is powered by Liquid, a protocol specifically developed for Astropad to speed up transfers between the iPad and a connected computer. Developers Matt Ronge and Geovanni Donelli, who met while working at Apple in 2006, claim Liquid is twice as fast as Apple's own transfer software, AirPlay, increasing frame rates from 30 to 60fps.

The app requires a third-party iPad stylus, such as Wacom's Intuos Creative Stylus or Adonit's Jot Touch 4, and supports all iPads with iOS 8 and all Macs with 10.9 or newer. The iPad component of the software is available at the App Store for free though it requires a companion app for the Mac which costs A$63.43. There's also an educational version for $26.57 and a free seven-day trial.
