The April issue of Australian Photography + digital magazine is packed with features on creating better portraits, capturing wildlife up close, advice on how to correct some classic post-production errors, and useful tips on shooting with telephoto lenses.

Our writer Rob Ditessa talks to three professional portrait shooters about the techniques and ideas they use to make their outstanding images. Frances Andrijich, Leanne King, and Karen Waller all use very different approaches, and they explain how and why they use their own styles. Experienced wildlife shooters Steve and Ann Toon outline how to get in close for truly intimate images of wildlife, and tell of the thrills and hazards of working in some of the most precarious environments on our planet, with some of our most unpredictable animals.

The techniques they use can be equally applied to your local wildlife. James Ostinga presents his list of the most common post-production editing errors he sees and reveals the simple steps enthusiasts can take to avoid ruining their images once they are on a computer. From selective colour to over-sharpening, there is a range of mistakes many amateurs regularly make, and there are easy ways to avoid them.

But before you get near a software program in post-production, Peter Burian advises you should aim to get your exposure as correct as possible ‘in camera’. Not only does this minimise the time you might have to spend in front of a computer, it also allows you to get the very best result from any subsequent software enhancements. Finally, regular writer Anthony McKee outlines the value of telephoto lenses, the optical effects inherent when you’re using one, and the way you can maximise their effectiveness.

Along with regular features like our Your Best Shot competition, Image Doctor, and our World View column by international shooter Frans Lanting, this month’s issue of Australian Photography + digital makes great reading.
