Photokina: Sandisk unveil monster 1TB SD card

The 1 terabyte threshold has finally been broken with the unveiling of SanDisk's new 1TB SSD.

The prototype memory card was unveiled by SanDisk and parent company Western Digital at Photokina in Cologne, Germany.

It was 16 years ago that SanDisk unveiled the world’s first 64 megabyte SD card — a breakthrough in capacity at the time. To give you an idea of what less than 2 decades of development mean, you can now cram nearly 16,000 times the data onto a memory card the same size.

It was also at Photokina back in 2014 that SanDisk revealed its massive 512GB SDXC card — which was the world’s largest at the time.

Western Digital says the new SanDisk 1TB card is geared toward emerging technologies such as ultra-high-resolution photos, 4K videos, virtual reality, 360-degree video, and video surveillance.

No word yet on when we’ll be seeing it hit the market, but it's worth noting that when the 512GB SDXC card was announced in 2014 it came with a price tag of $800, so we're thinking you won't want to lose this one down the back of the couch.
