Photographers using Sony mirrorless cameras with adapted Canon lenses may want to check out a new product from Chinese lens and accessory maker Kipon.

The manufacturer has introduced a Canon EF-S adaptor that fits Sony E-mount bodies and includes a built-in variable neutral density filter, making it ideal for video shooters.

According to info from Kipon, the EF-S/E AF ND retains the autofocus and image stabilisation features of the lens and EXIF data is communicated so it can be recorded in the image files. The adaptor also allows manual focusing of the lens to trigger MF assistance features of the camera such as peaking or magnification.

The ND filter is turned via a wheel located on the barrel and is marked with values between 1.5 and 7 f-stops.

The adaptor is designed to allow users to select wide apertures and appropriate shutter speeds for shooting video. The adaptor's filtering system will also provide advantages for stills photographers who want to be able to add shallow depth of field to images outside on bright days, or for shooting longer exposures.

The adapter features an EF-S mount, so that it can use both EF and EF-S lenses but covers the full frame image circle for use on a7 series cameras.

While pricing is yet to be announced the company has suggested the adaptor will be priced at around $430 USD.
