Sony announce 24mm 1.4GM lens

Sony have announced their 30th lens, the 24mm F1.4 Prime G Master. The new lens is Sony's shortest prime lens in the GM lineup.

The new FE 24mm F1.4 GM is relatively compact and lightweight, measuring 75.4mm x 92.4mm, and weighing in at just 445g. The lens has a filter diameter of 67mm.

The FE 24mm F1.4 GM design comprises 10 groups with 13 elements featuring two XA (extreme aspherical) elements and three ED (Extra-low Dispersion) elements. Sony says the XA elements help suppress sagittal flare so that point light sources are accurately reproduced, something that should be useful for astrophotographers. The lens also features a Nano AR Coating to reduce flare and ghosting.

The FE 24mm F1.4 GM also features a relatively close focussing distance of 0.24 metres.

Inside is a new high power DDSSM (Direct Drive SSM) which delivers approximately three times greater 'thrust' than the previous DDSSM. Sony say this will help deliver quieter operation, a faster response and better AF.

Furthermore, the FE 24mm F1.4 GM includes a number of controls aiding ease of operation for both stills and movie shooting. An aperture ring allows direct, intuitive aperture control whilst an aperture click switch makes it possible to enable or disable click stops as required. The focus ring features Linear Response MF for manual focus control. The focus hold button is customisable and a focus mode switch makes it possible to quickly select auto or manual focus to match changing shooting conditions.

Local availability and pricing for the FE 24mm F1.4 GM are TBC, but in the US it is expected to retail for $1,400USD ($1,900AUD).
