The latest salvo in the storage arms race has been fired, with Lexar announcing the release of a new 256GB capacity Professional 1000x microSDXC UHS-II (U3) memory card.

According to the maker, the card has been designed specifically for action cams that require fast data transfer - such as GoPro's latest Hero 5 Black - as well as camcorders, tablets, and smartphones.

Lexar claims its Professional 1000x microSDXC UHS-II card can transfer data at speeds of up to 150MB per second and write speeds up to 90MB/s.

The new card has also undergone a ‘Works with GoPro’ verification testing process, to ensure compatibility and performance when used with the popular action camera brand's range of products.

Lexar says the new 256GB micro SD card is perfect for capturing recordings of 4K, 3D, and 1080p full-HD video - it can record up to nine hours of 4K video footage @30fps or HD 1080p @15Mbps.

The new card also comes with a microSD UHS-II USB 3.0 reader for improved workflows.

The Lexar Professional 1000x microSD UHS-II cards are backwards compatible with UHS-I devices.

The USB 3.0 reader is backed by a one year limited warranty. The 256GB card will be available in Q1 of 2017 with an MSRP of AUD$449.95. Also available in 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB capacities.
